Recycling

Most things we throw away aren't really rubbish. They can become new things — if we sort them.

The four bins ♻️

Around the world, families sort their rubbish into different bins. Each one becomes something new:

📄 Paper → newspapers, books, boxes again
🧴 Plastic → new bottles, fleece jumpers, park benches
🥫 Metal → new cans (a can can become a new can in 60 days)
🍌 Food → compost, then plant fertiliser

Why it matters 🌱

1m
years for plastic to break down
17
trees saved per tonne of paper recycled
95%
less energy: recycled aluminium vs new
8m t
plastic enters the ocean each year

Every plastic bottle thrown in the bin (not the recycling bin) is one bottle that might end up in the sea, where a sea turtle might eat it. The bottle thrown in the right bin becomes — eventually — a new bottle, or a fleece jacket, or a park bench.

The Big Idea

Reduce, reuse, recycle 💚

Recycling is good — but the very best thing is to not need a thing in the first place. Bring a water bottle. Say no to plastic straws. Use a tote bag. Eat the apple before it goes brown.

Earth has been here for 4.5 billion years. We've only been around for a tiny moment of that. Look after it for the next people.
