Lesson 2 ยท Patterns

Fibonacci & Nature

A secret pattern of numbers, hidden inside flowers, pinecones, seashells โ€” even galaxies.
Scene 1

The pattern: add the last two numbers ๐Ÿงฎ

Start with 1. And 1 again. Now add them together: 1 + 1 = 2. Then add the last two: 1 + 2 = 3. Keep going. Each new number is the sum of the previous two.

Tap the button to reveal the next number. What do you predict?
Scene 2

The numbers make a spiral ๐ŸŒ€

If you draw squares with these sizes โ€” 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 โ€” and tuck them together, then draw a curve through themโ€ฆ you get a beautiful spiral. This is called the Fibonacci spiral.

1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21
Each square is a Fibonacci number. The spiral grows wider and wider โ€” forever.
Scene 3

Nature uses this pattern everywhere ๐ŸŒ

Once you know what to look for, Fibonacci numbers appear in places you'd never expect. Plants and animals "discovered" this math millions of years before humans did.

๐ŸŒป Sunflower
The seeds spiral in two directions โ€” usually 34 one way and 55 the other. Both Fibonacci!
๐ŸŒฒ Pinecone
The bracts form spirals โ€” count them, you'll find 8 and 13. Always Fibonacci.
๐Ÿš Nautilus shell
The shell grows in a perfect Fibonacci spiral โ€” each chamber bigger than the last by the same ratio.
๐Ÿ Pineapple
Pineapple skin diamonds spiral in 5, 8, and 13 โ€” three Fibonacci numbers stacked.
๐ŸŒŒ Galaxies
Even galaxies โ€” like the one we live in โ€” have arms shaped in a Fibonacci spiral.
๐ŸŒธ Flower petals
Lilies have 3, buttercups 5, daisies 34 or 55. Almost always Fibonacci.
The Big Idea

Math is the language of nature ๐ŸŒฟ

Plants don't know they're using Fibonacci numbers. They just grow this way because it's the most efficient way to pack seeds, leaves, and petals โ€” every leaf gets sunlight, every seed gets space.

Math isn't just something humans invented. It's a pattern hiding inside the universe โ€” and we get to discover it.
